Miss Mouse Hides Behind Bears: You’re never too young for Miss Mouse. But the young kids get a different version. Today there were five bears and each had an item underneath them (the same items for all five weeks this session).  We yell, “Miss Mouse, Miss Mouse, Come out! Come Out! Come Out!) then I say, Oh, is Miss Mouse behind the Green bear?  We check — no, it was a pair of two warm mittens. It goes on until bear #5 where Miss Mouse is hiding.

Prop Story:  When Cat Gets Up (Wiggleworms) (with puppets) “When cats get up in the morning, this is what they say, when cats get up in the morning this is what they say. They say Meow.  Meow. This is what they say…” And it goes on with different animals.

Activity:  There’s a dog on my …. (dog plush).We purchase plush animals from Oriental Trading for each session. The kids names are on the dogs and they’ll get to take them home.  Then we sing:   There’s a dog on my knee on my knee (ruff ruff) There’s a dog on my knee on my knee (ruff ruff) there’s a dog on my knee there’s a dog on my knee there’s a dog on my knee on me knee (ruff ruff) etc picking different body parts.

Valley View School from outside DG came to the library today. They took busses and train (“It was a BIG train!”) to get here.  I didn’t really have a theme, just winter inspired.

Miss Mouse was happy to have them visit. She asked lots of questions to figure out how they came to the library.  We discovered it was a  BIG train.

Flannel: Whose House?  different “houses” (barn, nest, hole, aquarium) and different animals. Match the animal to the house. The pig doesn’t go in the aquarium…

Prop Story:  The Mitten. We have a large (3′) mitten with a velcro side to make this a prop story. 

Song 2: Jingle Bells by Raffi.  (It goes on a little too long.)

Fingerplay 2: roll roll sugar babies (and sugar cookies, munch munch munch extended it because it was potty time. and they kept taking kids out .. took too long)

Book 2:  Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas

Book 3: Here Comes the Big Mean Dust Bunny by Jan Thomas. These are so funny. I hadn’t intended to do both, but the en masse potty break really threw me off.

Flannel:  Must be Santa by Raffi.  I took the different elements of the song: beard, starry night, etc, and we slowly build the song up. Each time the different elements are mentioned I point to them.

Welcome Song: My Hand Waves Hello.  Since they were so old, I got silly and we waved our wrists around.

Miss Mouse came out and talked about baking cookies with cheese.  It was fun but fast, these kids were too old for Miss Mouse (I think it was here when I realized they were older than I imagined).

Book 1: My Dog by Angela Joy

Song/Prop 1: How Much is that Doggie in the Window.  I have about 10 – 12 different Folkmanis dog puppets.  I have them behind a  half-wall stage that I’m sitting behind and slowly add all the dogs to the wall.

Song/Prop 2: Who Let the Dogs Out?  Everyone got a puppets (even the leaders) and we barked along. 

Book 2: Snappy Little Pets by Steer

Book 3: Doggies by Sandra Boynton. We took our story time copy and enlarged it to make a story card version.  We barked and howled our way to 10.

Book 4: Jingle Jingle by Nicola Smee. This is such a fun sweet story and I enjoyed it so much from this morning, I wanted to do it again. This time we got the jingle bells out and every time the sleigh moved so did the bells.

I really enjoyed the group and they seemed to enjoy it as well. I just read their visit would be a library tour.  I sincerely hope that was wrong and they came for a story time, ’cause that is what they got.    SH 12/12

I was very scatter brained to day but this was a forgiving group. Who stole the cookie was a little awkward (parents helped a lot!) but everyone agreed that the pay-off (Cookie Monster) was worth it. A nice group.
